Julius Mosley, of Far Rockaway, and the teen, who is a resident of Springfield Gardens, were arrested at 2:20 a.m. on Tuesday, July 26, in North Lawrence, according to the Nassau County Police Department.
NCPD said officers responded to a report of speeding cars near the Five Towns Shopping Center in Woodmere.
When they arrived at the scene, the vehicles were gone, but officers received an alert about a serious crash where a vehicle hit a tree near 249-71 Rockaway Boulevard, police said.
Police then saw Mosley and the teen attempting to flee the scene, and officers arrested them, authorities said.
Investigators found out that the vehicle that struck the tree was an unoccupied stolen Honda Pilot, NCPD reported.
A BB gun was also found in the Honda, according to the report.
Police said both defendants were charged with third-degree criminal possession of stolen property and third-degree unlawful use of a vehicle.
NCPD said Mosley will be arraigned on Wednesday, July 27, and the 17-year-old will be in the Youth Part of the First District Court.
